Vrbnik, Krk

In the Kvarner Bay, on the east coast of the island of Krk, there is the town of Vrbnik, which already gives the first sight to suggest that this is an unusual place. Vrbnik is situated high up on a cliff that literally dives into the sea. With Šilo, it is the only large village on the east coast of the island of Krk. On the landward side, it is lined with vineyards where the Vrbnik Žlahtina indigenous wine variety is cultivated and whose name is derived from the Slavic adjective “žlahten”, which means noble. Today the most important product of Vrbnik's fields and of Vrbnik in general, is its golden yellow wine - the Žlahtina; which has become famous even in wider Croatian circles. From a distance, you will first see the bell tower of the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and then the walls of the Frankopan castle.

Vrbnik is one of the most famous Croatian villages. It became famous thanks to its Glagolitic heritage and famous popular song with its special melody and content which is played and arranged in variety of performances and is called Vrbniče nad morem (Vrbnik above the sea). 

With its rich history, Vrbnik is known as the cradle of Croatian literacy and it is surely one of the oldest villages on the island of Krk.

Narrow streets prevail in Vrbnik, so it is not strange that the world's narrowest street (19,69 in) is located exactly here.
