The island of Pag, with 270 km of indented coast, has the longest coastline on the Adriatic, full of gulfs, cliffs and beaches. Since the 9th century, there have been settlements overlooking the fairy-tale beaches.
Povljana is located on a hilltop in the south of the island of Pag, in a beautiful natural bay. Turned to the west it is protected from the strong winds called “bura” and the southeast wind.It provides the shelter to the traveler from the sea as from the on land, lovers of island karst and herbs covered with sun and spiced salt. This land with the numerous sources of fresh water enabled more intensive farming and wine growing and fed the most of the island for centuries. That is why this area between the two coves - Old and New Povljana - looks like a green oasis in the middle of the extremely karst island of Pag. By the middle of the 20th century a tourism starts to develop in Povljana. Povljana is expanding urban, changing its appearance and from the former rural island center, becoming an increasingly important tourist center with about 800 inhabitants.
Povljana can boast of miles of diverse beaches, exceptionally clean sea, of which special mention is the bay of Stara Povljana, which is rich in shellfish.
Surrounded by plains, it provides additional cycling trails by natural rock. Over the island of Pag, there are more than 100 kilometers of cycling trails available to you. And if you are a birdwatcher, visit the nearby ornithological reservoirs of Veliko Blato (swampy water reserve) and Malo Blato with a freshwater lake.
If you suffer from rheumatic or similar problems, you can try to seek help in the nearby Segal lake and treat yourself to healing mud.
