The town and port of Ploče are located in the southernmost, Dubrovnik-Neretva County a few kilometers west of the mouth of the Neretva River, about halfway between Split and Dubrovnik. They are located at the origin of a centuries-old natural path along the Neretva River valley that connects the neighboring Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Adriatic Sea.
Ploče today is a small modern port town at the mouth of the Neretva River in Dalmatia in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Just over 6500 live in Ploče, with around 11,000 inhabitants in the wider area, mostly Croats and about 9% of members of other nationalities.
The backbone of the economy of the city of Ploce is the sea freight port, the second largest in Croatia. The port has a large number of related activities: freight forwarding, warehousing, transport, logistics, etc.
In addition to the fertile Neretva and the Adriatic Sea, the true attraction of the summer event is the Hull Race and the Marathon Boat, an amateur sports competition in the race of the original original vessels - the boat, from Metković to Ploče. Not far from the town there are the Baćina Lakes (seven freshwater lakes) along the branches of the mountain range of Biokovo. During the summer months they provide refreshment and warm days.
