Bakar

Bakar is located in Bakar Bay and is part of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is only 15 kilometers from Rijeka and is connected by the Adriatic highway with other parts of our coast.

The town of Bakar is located on the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea, and consists of 9 settlements. It is located on a hill in the northwestern part of the bay of the same name, surrounded by hills that reach a height of up to 300m above the sea. Rich history and magical views adorn Bakar and its bay. Ladies and gentlemen came to enjoy the beauty of the city and the bay back in the Austro-Hungarian era, and tourism developed more intensively in the 60s of the last century.

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the largest city on the territory of today's country, and it exuded the spirit of maritime life. According to the census of Hungary and Croatia from 1787 and 1804, Bakar had more inhabitants than Zagreb. In 1849, a maritime school, the oldest vocational school in Croatia, was opened there.

It also owes its reputation to a sparkling wine made from vines grown on steep slopes, poured in courts all over Europe. The story of the famous sparkling wine began in the second half of the 18th century, when Empress Maria Theresa allowed the nearby wasteland to be turned into vineyards. The land was given to the serfs, who cultivated the Belina vine. The sparkling wine "Bakarska vodica" was made from that vine.
